5 Ways to Care for Your Classic Mercedes

If you’ve got a classic or vintage Mercedes that you’ve restored or are in the process of restoring, you’ll want to make sure you’re keeping it in top shape. Here are five simple maintenance tips that can make sure your classic car is continually being restored to better condition, instead of deteriorating:

  1. Use Mercedes Benz Parts

This might seem obvious, but it’s important to shop at a Mercedes Benz parts center rather than going generic. Using original Mercedes parts ensures that you maintain the temporal integrity of the car, and will be important in keeping up its value in case you ever decide to sell. If you’re having trouble finding vintage Mercedes parts, try a used Mercedes Benz parts center or even start your search online.

  2. Wash and Wax Carefully

Of course, you want to make sure your car is carefully detailed (including the undercarriage) and waxed. But you don’t want to do so every day. If your car is properly stored, you shouldn’t need to put it through the stress of deep cleaning too often. Instead, dust it regularly.

  3. Prioritize Climate Control

Extreme hot and cold both damage the mechanical and aesthetic aspects of your classic Mercedes. Either ensure that you have an appropriate garage space at home that keeps your car away from sunlight and dust, or invest in a specialized storage unit. Just be sure to drain fluids and remove the battery if you’re going to be storing it for an extended period of time.

  4. Use the Right Covers

Your car cover should be made of soft cotton or a similar material, never heavy canvas. Since a cover will keep the dust out, you should roll down the windows periodically to allow for better circulation.

  5. Take a Drive

Even classic cars are meant to be driven! You can keep the engine in good condition by taking your car out for a short drive at least once a month. If your car has trouble starting, make sure you at least turn the engine over on a more frequent basis.
